A Scenic Bicycle TourAlthough Lancaster County back roads may not be ideal for large vehicles, such as tractor trailers, throughout the year these winding, little-traveled roads can be a bicyclist's dream. The farms and covered bridges that span and enhance the Amish countryside can be seen at close proximity and at a leisurely pace when biking. Bicycling also allows for easy stopping and shopping at road-side stands, as well as opportunities to talk to the animals and take photographs (please respect the privacy of our Amish neighbors).

Lancaster County has more miles of road than any other county in Pennsylvania, most of which remain untainted by motorists and commercial establishments. The flattest part of the county is in the region surrounding the towns of Bird-in-Hand and Leola. The more challenging hilly areas lie south of Strasburg and Route 741. According to Bill Simpson's
Guide to The Amish Country, "The best piece of advice (for bicyclists) is to stay off the numbered highways."

Here is a list of parks that promote bicycling and bike trails:
  CENTRAL PARK
Take Duke Street south through Lancaster city. Turn right onto Chesapeake Street;
go .2 miles and turn left into the park.
CONEWAGO RECREATION TRAIL
From Elizabethtown take Route 230 West for one mile. The trail head is
located on the right just before the Getty Station.
  LANCASTER JUNCTION RECREATION TRAIL
Route 283 to the Spooky Nook Road Exit. Turn right onto Spooky Nook Road
for approximately .1 mile and take another right onto Champ Road. Follow this
road for one half mile. The trail is located on the left where the road ends.
GIFFORD PINCHOT STATE PARK
2200 Rosstown Rd., Lewisberry, PA 17339
717-432-5011

Here's to an enjoyable ride!
